Salvage teams from SMIT initiated the operation early this morning, successfully freeing the 493-foot RoRo vessel from its stuck position off the Swedish coast, where it had been stranded since the early hours of October 22. The vessel's refloating was achieved by pressurising compartments near the breach in its hull, which took approximately 45 minutes to complete.
 
To relocate the Marco Polo, two tugs were employed, moving it to a predetermined anchorage about one nautical mile to the southeast. TT-Line, the ferry's owner, reported that the vessel dropped its anchors at the new location, following which divers were dispatched to conduct a comprehensive hull inspection to assess the extent of the damage caused during its grounding.
 
Despite a high swell on October 29, which temporarily shifted the Marco Polo, the Swedish Coastguard reported that the oil spill was less severe than anticipated during the vessel's refloating operation. Their decision not to pressurise the damaged fuel tank contributed to minimising additional fuel releases. The damaged tank initially contained approximately 160 cubic metres of oil.
 
Cleanup efforts were swiftly undertaken by the Coastguard, removing oil and oil waste from the water and shores. The salvage company intends to tow the Marco Polo to Stillerydshamnen in Karlshamn on Thursday morning, with the operation commencing at 0800 and expected to conclude by midday. It's important to note that under Swedish law, the Coastguard may fine TT-Line for the cleanup operation. Additionally, the ferry's captain and third officer were fined for negligence in vessel navigation during foggy nighttime conditions, using only the electronic chat system and not utilising radar or additional lookout resources.
