Despite this, both ships are equipped with stabilizers to handle rough waters.
The new 6,700-gross-ton Magellan Discoverer is designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. It features a hybrid-electric propulsion system powered by two MAN main engines and gensets, along with ABB Azipod units and a battery bank developed by Corvus Energy. This combination promises a smoother, quieter operation.
The ship will incorporate sustainable technologies, such as elevators that capture energy from braking and a waste heat recovery system, with all hydraulic equipment using biodegradable oil and eco-friendly coolants.
The vessel will be 308 feet (94 meters) long, compliant with Polar PC6 ice class specifications, and meet Tier III emission standards. It can accommodate up to 96 passengers, although the air-sea cruises will limit this to 76 passengers and a maximum of 67 crew members.
A notable feature of both Magellan ships is the luxurious accommodation they offer, catering to a market that values comfort and style in exploration cruises. The Magellan Discoverer will have 40 passenger cabins, including suites, deluxe cabins, and single-occupancy rooms, all with private balconies. There will also be six passenger decks and various amenities, including a dining area, meeting rooms, observation bar, gym, sauna, and a wet science lab, as well as a bow observation area.
The ship's first Antarctic program is slated to begin in December 2026.
