3D Printing Integration Planned for Virginia-Class Submarines by U.S. Navy to Accelerate Construction

The Newport News Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), in collaboration with General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), has recently partnered with a 3D printing firm known as AMMCON to procure a unique component. This component will be integrated into the Virginia-class attack submarine named Oklahoma (SSN 802).
 
These two prominent original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the Virginia-class submarines have been focusing their efforts on the availability and deployment of marine-based alloys, such as copper-nickel, as a viable alternative to traditional copper-nickel castings.
 
Notably, the OEMs have recently made the decision to incorporate a 3D-printed part for a copper-and-nickel deck drain assembly. Collaborating with AMMCON on this innovative endeavor, GDEB and HII successfully produced a copper-and-nickel deck drain component using additive manufacturing technology.
 
In terms of operational readiness, as of FY 2023, approximately 37% of the US Navy's SSN fleet, comprising 31 out of 49 units, was unavailable for operations. Out of these, 14 submarines were undergoing maintenance, while four were categorized as "idle" and had not yet undergone maintenance. This represents a deterioration in the active-to-inactive ratio compared to FY 2022 when approximately 33% of the total SSN force was either undergoing maintenance or idle.
 
Additionally, delays have also impacted the construction of the US Navy's 12 ballistic missile (SSBN) Columbia-class submarines, which come at a substantial cost of $132 billion. The Navy foresees the potential for increased costs as delays persist.
 
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) of the United States has noted that the US Navy lacks insights into the program's schedule. This is primarily because HII Newport, the shipbuilder responsible for the project, has not conducted a schedule risk analysis to identify and manage risks associated with achieving planned delivery dates.
 
The transition by GDEB and HII to 3D printing technology holds the promise of addressing these delays. This transition enables the on-demand production and customization of parts and specialized tools. HII has already used this strategy, such as with the use of a spot face cutter on the Gerald R. Ford class aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79).
These advancements in advanced manufacturing methods, particularly 3D printing, have led HII to assert that such technological developments will result in substantial time savings, potentially saving thousands of man-hours in naval manufacturing processes.
