DNV's Verification of HD Hyundai's HiNAS Control System

At Gastech 2023, DNV has issued a design verification report (DVR) for the AI-based autonomous navigation system known as "HiNAS Control." This system resulted from a collaborative effort between Avikus, a specialist in navigation, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Additionally, the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) for this innovative system.

The "HiNAS Control" system integrates data from numerous navigation systems using artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR). This cutting-edge technology empowers ships to autonomously navigate while avoiding collisions, all while optimizing their routes and speeds. By providing valuable assistance to navigators, the system helps reduce fatigue and contributes to safer voyages, improved fuel efficiency, and a reduction in maritime accidents and emissions.

Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV Maritime, emphasized the paramount importance of safety in the maritime industry. He expressed satisfaction in contributing DNV's competence and expertise to assess the design of HD Hyundai's and Avikus' system. He also highlighted the significance of leveraging advanced technologies to enhance safety and environmental performance in the maritime sector and expressed enthusiasm for continued cooperation in deploying such systems on high-seas vessels.

Alfonso Castillero, CEO of the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), expressed pride in the registry's role as an innovation leader and its partnership in advancing the design verification for this state-of-the-art technology. He affirmed that "HiNAS Control" will play a pivotal role in enhancing safety, efficiency, and the future of the global shipping industry.

In evaluating these groundbreaking innovations, DNV utilized its class guideline for autonomous ships (DNV-CG-0264), drawing on risk assessments and relevant industry standards. "DNV verifies HiNAS Control, an AI-driven autonomous navigation system by HD Hyundai and Avikus, promoting safer and efficient maritime journeys. LISCR grants Approval in Principle. Embracing technology for a brighter maritime future! #MaritimeInnovation #SafetyAtSea"
