World's First Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier, Suiso Frontier, Arrives in Oman to Foster Hydrogen Supply Chains
By Sea and Coast | 16/08/2023
The world's very first liquefied hydrogen carrier, known as the Suiso Frontier, is making its debut in Oman. Crafted by the esteemed Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), this technological marvel is scheduled to grace the shores of the Sultan Qaboos Port in Muscat on August 14th, marking an auspicious milestone in the evolution of commercially viable hydrogen supply chains.

Departing from Abu Dhabi, the Suiso Frontier embarked on a remarkable journey to Oman, demonstrating the immense potential of hydrogen as a clean and versatile energy carrier. This monumental visit not only symbolizes the strides made in hydrogen technology but also highlights Oman's burgeoning role in the emergent hydrogen economy.

The arrival of the Suiso Frontier in Oman is a testament to the nation's progressive stance on harnessing hydrogen's potential. In alignment with a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), Oman is poised to ascend as a competitive, low-emission hydrogen supplier by the year 2030. This bold ambition positions Oman at the forefront of hydrogen innovation and cements its commitment to a sustainable energy future.

Constructed by KHI in 2020, the Suiso Frontier is more than a mere vessel; it is a testament to human ingenuity and engineering excellence. Designed as a prototype ship, it serves as a testbed to evaluate the technical intricacies of transporting liquefied hydrogen across the seas. Its grandeur is matched only by its precision, boasting an impressive 8,000-tonne weight, a length of 116 meters, and a width of 19 meters. The ship's unique configuration incorporates a double tank, capable of holding 1,250 cubic meters of hydrogen—a feat achieved through meticulous design and state-of-the-art engineering.

Maintaining hydrogen at its liquid state is no trivial task; the Suiso Frontier accomplishes this by preserving hydrogen at a chilling temperature of -253 degrees Celsius. This is facilitated by a cutting-edge diesel-electric propulsion system that empowers the vessel to reach a speed of 13.0 knots, ensuring efficient and reliable transportation.

A notable event during the Suiso Frontier's maiden voyage was a fire incident caused by the failure of an incorrectly-fitted electrical solenoid valve. Despite this unexpected setback, the vessel's resilience and determination prevailed. The incident, which resulted in a brief propagation of flame from a liquefied hydrogen carrier gas combustion unit's vent stack, did not deter the ship from its mission. The Suiso Frontier's tenacity led to the successful delivery of the world's inaugural cargo of liquefied hydrogen to Japan, showcasing its unwavering commitment to advancing hydrogen transportation technology.

As Oman continues to forge ahead in the realm of hydrogen-related developments, the nation has solidified its stance through strategic partnerships and impactful project agreements. These initiatives underscore Oman's dedication to pioneering innovative solutions and catalyzing positive change on a global scale.

Suiso Frontier's landmark arrival in Oman heralds a new era of possibilities for the hydrogen market. Its trailblazing journey from concept to reality exemplifies the remarkable potential of human innovation and collaboration. As the world watches this historic moment unfold, Oman's role as a visionary and trailblazer in the hydrogen economy is firmly established.
