ADNOC partners with SeaOwl for unmanned supply vessels
By Seaandcoast | 20/05/2023
ADNOC Logistics & Services (ADNOC L&S), the maritime logistics arm of Abu Dhabi's state oil company, ADNOC, has announced its collaboration with French company SeaOwl to design unmanned, remotely operated vessels (ROVs). The ROVs will be used for the transportation of equipment, vehicles, and supplies to and from offshore sites, with the design being capable of reducing carbon emissions by up to 30%.

The use of smart automation systems and self-navigation technology will also optimize routing and propulsion, further supporting the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative and ADNOC's 2030 Sustainability Agenda. This strategic partnership between ADNOC L&S and SeaOwl marks the latest commitment to innovative and sustainable energy practices by ADNOC, and is another example of how the company is leveraging cutting-edge technology to optimize its maritime operations, improve safety, and increase efficiency.

The 55-meter long ROVs will be operated from an onshore control room through a satellite link, with artificial intelligence (AI) systems controlling propulsion, dynamic positioning, remote communication, and cybersecurity. This highly innovative and unique approach to the design and operation of ROVs is a testament to the UAE's commitment to implementing smart technologies in the energy sector.

ADNOC has also launched the Decarbonization Technology Challenge, a global competition aimed at finding innovative solutions that will transform, decarbonize, and future-proof the global energy sector. The challenge is open to scale-up companies specializing in carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), new energies, oil and gas emissions reduction, digital applications, advanced materials for decarbonization, and nature-based solutions.

The finalists will be invited to present their ideas to a panel of judges in December, and the winners will receive up to $1 million in piloting opportunities with ADNOC, gaining access to research and innovation facilities in Abu Dhabi. The Decarbonization Technology Challenge is being delivered in partnership with the Net Zero Technology Center and supported by AWS, bp, and Hub71.

With a deadline for submissions set for August 11, ADNOC has earmarked $15 billion for decarbonization projects by 2030, including carbon capture, electrification, new CO2 absorption technology, and enhanced investments in hydrogen and renewables. This significant investment highlights ADNOC's dedication to becoming a leader in sustainable energy practices and positioning the UAE as a trailblazer in the global energy sector.
