Save Oceans for a Safe Earth Save

We also warmly welcome maritime experts, environment specialists and researchers from different parts of the world who have joined online, across various timezones, for the 2nd webinar on the Global Maritime Accord Academy initiative, where we examine the role maritime law and legislation in the Global Commons can play to save the oceans. 

The Oceans are literally in hot waters, because the sea surface temperatures, across the world, are soaring to the highest levels in recorded history. 

The sea-levels are rising, due to global warming, resulting in erosion of coastal areas and sinking of low-level islands. The shipping industry continues to spew over a billion tonnes of CO2 emissions to pollute environment. Deep sea-bed mining and acidication in the oceans have resulted in contamination of natural marine habitat and depletion of biodiversity. 

 

Human kind continues to oversh and dump 13 million tonnes of plastic garbage into the oceans every year. If the current rate of pollution and depletion of sh stock continues, in a few decades from now we will have more plastic in the oceans than sh. Humankind is blind to the fact that oceans are essential to life on Earth. The oceans are the suppliers of oxygen and provide 50% of our oxygen needs, and I would like all of you to reect on an important fact, that every second breath we take comes from the oceans. They are the absorbers of Carbon dioxide and approximately 30% of the green house gases are silently absorbed by the oceans. The oceans are rich in oil, gas and mineral resources and provide humanity with seafood and salt from the sea. They are a virtual heat sink which keep our Blue planet cool, they are a great source of renewable energy and have emerged as global economic highways for transit of over 80% of world’s trade. 

 

Today the oceans are under severe threat, due to indiscriminate pollution of the seas and contamination of the natural marine habitat, resulting in disruption of weather patterns and adverse impact of climate change on the oceans. The maritime domain is virtually in the eye of the storm, as large percentage of extreme climate conditions are turning into natural disasters.

 

The high seas or the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), comprise about 65% of the global ocean spaces and 95% of the Earth’s habitat. However, this is the least protected area on the planet and global commons have been over-exploited and polluted by human need and greed, under the garb of freedom of the seas and common heritage of the mankind. 


Till recently, there was not a single treaty or legislation for governance and protection of the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. A few months ago, the members of the United Nations, adopted the rst ever treaty for conservation and protection of marine life and biodiversity, in the Global commons. One of the objectives of our Global Maritime Accord is to promote legislation and governance in ABNJ and the theme of the webinar today is actually a SOS call to see whether the maritime law and legislation can provide some path-breaking recommendations to save the oceans. 


The new treaty which is under the United Nations Convention on Law of the sea is yet to be signed and ratied. This gives a window for opportunity and greater validity to our initiative to complement the treaty by drafting the Global Maritime Accord and drawing an action plan to counter the detrimental impacts of global warming and climate change by leveraging the oceans. This initiative has clean, healthy and sustainable oceans as its core theme to ensure conservation, protection preservation and sustainable development of the oceans, with the overall vision to Save Oceans for a Safe Earth.
