World's First Conversion Of A Large Containership to ULCV LNG Is Achieved

German Liner Company, Hapag-Lloyd confirmed to Offshore Energy-Green Marine that they have completed the world's first conversion of a large containership to LNG as fuel.
 
Hapag-Lloyd said, "We will have a few agreement work to accomplish though which will be completed during the next month."
 
The 15,000 TEU vessel Sajir, now renamed Brussels Express, left the Chinese shipyard Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co.  last saturday and is now sailing in the North China heading towards Busan, Korea. In the current scenario, the ships is coming back to its service. 
 
The vessel arrived at the Shanghai yard on 31st August 2020 for retrofit, which was set to start in May  2020, this delayed was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making its official start on 2nd September 2020.
 
The ship was properly fitted with 6,500-cbm LNG Mark III tank that was designed by the French LNG containment specialist GTT. MAN Energy Solutions was given the duty with the conversation of the vessel's HFO-burning. They used MAN B&W 9S90ME-C engine to dual-fuel MAN B&W ME-GI. 
 
The project is of core importance for Hupag-Lloyd's sustainable game-plan, as by using LNG they can reduce greenhouse gas emissions almost by 15 to 30 percent and sulphur dioxide with other particulate matter emissions by more than 90 percent. It nearly costed around $35 million for the conversion. 
 
Richard Von Berlepsch, Managing Director Fleet at Hapag-Lloyd AG said, "With this exclusive pilot project, we believe to learn for the future and to pave the process for the large ships to be retrofitted for using this assured alternative fuel. However, our long-term goal advances towards carbon dioxide neutral shipping operations with the help of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG)."
 
The Sajir, renamed Brussels, is one of the 17 vessels in Hapag-Lloyd's fleet that were formerly designed to be LNG-accessible.
