Researchers develop equipment called HyDrone to measure Underwater Radiated Noise
Team Sea and Coast | 09/01/2021
University of Strathclyde's researchers in Scotland have developed new equipment to measure underwater noise generated by ships.

The underwater radiated noise (URN) generated by the marine, military, oil and gas industry, and shipping traffic poses danger to marine life and ecosystem.

The United Nations at its Convention of Migratory Species addressed and listed the issue and called for more development and research on the consequences of the underwater rated noise in 2018.

Named HyDrone, the new equipment is a waterproof aerial drone fitted with a SoundTrap hydrophone recorder, which can measure the URN produced by the propulsion systems of marine craft.
