Flames broke out in the Greek-owned super tanker posing a serious threat to marine life

Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, an oil tanker off the coast of Sri Lanka caught fire early in September 2020. The rescue team doused the flames but the fire reignited with the concerns of putting the world into the worst environmental disaster.

On September 3, MT New Diamond, a large crude oil carrier caught fire. The fire-stricken oil tanker was carrying a total of 1,700 tonnes of diesel along with 270,000 tonnes of crude oil. The carrier was charted by the Indian oil corporation and was transporting oil from the port of Mina Al Ahmadi in Kuwait to the Indian port of Paradip, at the state-owned Indian Oil Corp refinery.

According to the coast guard, the vessel reported a major explosion in its engine room but it did not spread to where the oil is kept. After 70 hours of intensive operation, the fire was contained but a fresh blaze broke out the next day. The fire was doused by the India and Sri Lanka joint rescue navy ships posing the fear of a massive oil spill.

Rescue aircraft sprayed a chemical on the vessel to minimize damage. The fire put forth concerns and threats to the marine environment. A patch of diesel was found near the oil tanker a few days ago, experts have warned significant damage if it starts leaking or explodes. The Supertanker was later pushed 50 nautical miles from the east coast off Srilanka to avert chances of any further damage to the Sri Lankan coastline due to the oil spill.

Sri Lankan govt sought compensation of  340 million rupees for the assistance offered by the Sri Lankan forces and Marine Environment Protection Authority to the fire-stricken oil tanker MT Diamond.  The notice came out of the Sri Lankan court with the order to obtain the notice against the vessel captain. 

The blaze exploded on the 20 years old supertanker resulted in the death of a Filipino crew member and another was injured in this mishap.

However, after burning intermittently for almost a week, the fire was extinguished on 11 September
